Did you know your insurance may cover nutrition counseling?
Even if you don’t have an actual diagnosis, many insurance companies will cover nutrition counseling for prevention of a disease, oftentimes at LITTLE to NO cost to you.
At this time, Off-Road Nutrition is currently an In-Network Provider with certain plans for:
Blue Shield of California
Covered California Plans through BS of Ca
Federal BCBS Plans
Certain Out-of-State BCBS plans
United HealthCare
Anthem Blue Cross (NOTE: At this time I am NOT taking new Anthem Blue Cross clients)
Interested in checking to see what nutrition benefits your insurance offers?
Start by calling the 800 number on the back of your insurance card, and ask them the following questions:
- If the insurance company asks for a CPT code please provide them with the following codes: 97802 & 97803. If they say you do not have coverage using those codes NEXT ask them to check your coverage for the following CPT codes: S9470, 99401, 99402, 99403 and 99404.
- If the representative asks for a diagnosis code – please tell them the visit is coded the ICD 10 code: Z71.3
- If they don’t accept Z71.3 then provide them with Z72.4 and see if they will cover that diagnosis instead on your plan.
- If you have an eating disorder or are overweight, obese, have pre-diabetes, diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol you may want to see what your coverage is for these diagnoses as well.
- I will usually try to code your visit using preventative coding to maximize the number of visits you receive from your insurance carrier.
Note: A referral is legally required by the State of California for all Registered Dietitians to practice, but insurance may have their own requirements.
Note: At this time, Off-Road Nutrition ONLY offers Telehealth.
- Your carrier will let you know how many visits they are willing to cover. Depending on the carrier, the number of visits will vary from 0 to unlimited depending on medical need.
- In the event that you have a deductible, applicable payment will be due at the time of service.
- Registered Dietitians are usually considered specialists, so a specialist co-pay may be due. If it is determined that you are responsible for a co-pay or co-insurance, the amount will be due at the time of service. This information is often apparent on the front of your actual insurance card. Co-pays may not be applicable, however, if we bill the session as preventative.
- Different insurance reps might give you different answers, so it’s important to document the details of your call in case of a dispute.
